Feel like you're pouring your heart and soul into your marketing but struggling to create a buzz and attract a loyal following?
In today’s letter, I’m sharing some surprising marketing lessons I learned from organizing and running my own half marathon, "The Hiben Half."

👇
1. Name It and Claim It
If you think the name of your business… event… course… product… or whatever… doesn’t matter… you’re dead wrong.
The way MOST people name their thing is rather forgettable, OR it doesn’t clearly communicate what it is.
For example…
My event was initially called “The Lady Bird Lake Trail - Half Marathon Fun Run.”
It takes ZERO brain power to figure out what the hell we’re doing… we’re running a half marathon around Lady Bird Trail, and we’re going to have some fun.
The original name was a bit of a mouthful, but thanks to one of the runners, it was since changed to “The Hiben Half Marathon."… a little more catchy, I’d say.
My other favorite example of this is what Nick Bare did with “Hybrid Athlete.” When people hear that… they associate it with someone who can lift heavy and run far.
I call this the name it and claim it principle… and it is a massively underrated marketing tactic.
Here’s how to do it for yourself:
- Pick a name that is CATCHY or CLEAR.
- Test it with your target audience.
- Start using it and creating content around it.
A strong name builds recognition, trust, and, ultimately, more clients.
2. Shared Goals
Most marketing efforts are selfish…
- “How can I get more followers?”
- “How can I get more subscribers?”
- “How can I get more leads?”
The problem with this approach is that it results in missing out on the energy and motivation that come from having a supportive community.
I (selfishly) set out to run a sub-1:40 half marathon… and when I hit it… it felt great.
But not NEARLY as great as it felt to see so many others cross the finish line and tell me that it is the FARTHEST or FASTEST they’ve ever run.
Seeing others win got me sooooooo much more fired up than anything I could have personally accomplished that day.
The same is true for your marketing.
Instead of focusing solely on your own gains, create a shared experience that encourages your audience to achieve their goals alongside you.
Here's how:
- Set an inspiring goal.
- Invite others to join you.
- Celebrate the achievements together.
Shared goals = amplified success.
3. Partnerships
If you’re trying to tackle your marketing efforts alone… you’re missing out on the benefits of collaboration and cross-promotions.
That would be like running a race without a support crew… you can definitely do it… but it’s going to be MUCH harder.
After my event, I tried to determine what made it so successful.
- Why was it so much fun?
- Why did so many people show up?
- Why did people hang around long after the race?
Well… fun fact, it had nothing to do with me.
- It was the free gifts our sponsors provided.
- It was the content my girlfriend captured.
- It was the giant post-race cookie a runner donated.
- It was the recovery drinks SAPs showed up with.
The same is true for your marketing.
By collaborating with other businesses or individuals, you can amplify your reach and offer more value to your customers.
Here's how to apply this yourself:
- Identify collaborative partners.
- Create win-win partnerships.
- Leverage each other’s strengths.
Strategic partnerships amplify your reach and create a richer experience for your customers.
Take home point…
- Name it and claim it.
- Create shared goals.
- Find partnerships.
