I’ve become obsessed with sand volleyball.
Doubles, to be specific.
The key to being good at doubles is chemistry.
Knowing where your partner is going to be next.
It’s a skill I’ve been able to bring to business.
Understanding someone better than they do.
The best way to do this is to become obsessed with your customers.
- Ask a lot of questions
- Spend time with them
- Explore their interests
- Show up where they show up
The more obsessed you become with your customer.
The better you’ll be able to predict their desires.
Doing fun things together bonds people.
But nothing compared to doing hard things.
It’s what I love most about fitness.
It’s a catalyst for growth and connection.
- A intense workout
- A long-distance run
- A sauna and cold plunge session
When done in the presence of other people.
It creates inseparable bonds.
When you’re thinking about your next community event.
Sure… make it fun.
But don’t underestimate the value of doing hard things.
The price to be well loved.
Is to be occasionally hated.
Travis Barker embodies this well.
Especially with his new Liquid Death commercial.
It’s one of the most polarizing ads I’ve seen in a long time.
Which is why it works.
It elicits emotion.
I’m not implying to be extreme for extreme’s sake.
I’m saying let your personality shine.
There is always room in this world for passionate people.
Take home point…
- Become obsessed with your customers.
- Do the hard thing… with other people.
-Don’t seek to be liked… seek to be loved.
My interview with Lee Ackerley inspired this email.
Next week, you’ll learn how this serial entrepreneur became a sleep expert.
