Every business needs a differentiator.
Without it, you end up competing on price.
That's not a fun game to play.
Instead... tell people why they should choose YOU over anyone else.
You have three options.
First, best or different.

👇
1. First
You don’t HAVE to be the first… but it has its advantages.
I recently took an airboat tour in the Everglades. It was awesome. If you have a chance… do it.
But while cruising around and checking out all the gators, our tour guide said something that bit me harder than a gator bite.
"I'm the fifth generation of tour guides... we've lived here forever."
In other words… his family was among the FIRST people to recognize an opportunity to make money by conducting alligator tours.
Crazy... and amazing.
But here's the good news: being first isn't reserved for those with a long family history.
I actually just recently started working with a client who is bringing a brand new medical technology to the Austin area (aka… first).
Here are a few ways you can do it yourself:
- The first in your area
- The first treatment technique
- The first with a particular technology
- The first with a unique program or package
First to market often means first in the minds of your ideal clients.
2. Best
If you can’t be the FIRST, be the BEST.
One of my favorite things to do while traveling is to check out the local health and fitness scene.
Partly because I’m a total bro and love to get a good pump… but it also gives me insights into how other health brands run their business.
While searching around Marco Island for a good place to lift, I stumbled upon Xcel Fitness.
It was close… it had great reviews… and here’s what their website said…
“Our objective has always been to deliver the CLEANEST atmosphere with the best customer service, cutting-edge equipment, certified personal trainers, and expert physical therapists, all in a modern spa setting.”
The copywriting is a little cheesy, but it had “the best” written all over it.
And to be honest… it was an excellent gym for a little island town.
But here’s how to apply this in your own business.
- Gather testimonials and reviews.
- Uplevel your skills and knowledge.
- Create a superior client experience.
- Strive for excellence in areas people don’t expect.
Be the 'best in class' in any category and watch your business thrive.
3. Different
I saved the best for last.
If you want to be the FIRST and the BEST at the same time… just be DIFFERENT.
My buddies and I decided to take a little trip to Naples to see what all the hype was about… and to have dinner.
But while walking down the main strip, I couldn’t help but notice that every restaurant was selling fine dining or Italian food… neither of which I care for.
So… after a quick Google search, I found a spot called Sushi Thai Downtown at the very end of the strip.
When we first walked in, it looked like a hole in the wall. So much so that even my buddy turned to me and said, “Uhhh… where are all the people? Should we go somewhere else?”
To which I responded… “Trust me.”
We decided to stay, and I can say without question that I ate the best poke bowl I’ve ever had—and I’ve had some pretty incredible poke bowls.
The lesson?
Being different is a powerful way to stand out and attract your ideal clients in a sea of similarity.
Sushi Thai didn't try to compete with the countless Italian restaurants and fine dining establishments in Naples.
They carved out their own unique space by offering something different, and that's precisely what drew us in.
Here's how to apply this in your business:
- Offer something unique.
- Craft a compelling brand story.
- Develop a distinctive brand identity.
- Embrace your unique strengths and passions.
Dare to be different… you won’t regret it.
Take home point…
- Be the first.
- Be the best.
- Or just be different.
