You end up marketing to no one.
Here’s a three-step guide to finding your ideal client.

1. Know your goats
Trying to market to everyone is like herding goats.
It's chaotic, exhausting, and rarely effective.
I’ve been living on a farm for the past week, and I’ve quickly learned that the best way to get a goat’s attention is not to chase them but to attract them.
How do you attract a goat?
You figure out what they want.
How do you figure out what they want?
You spend time with them and get to know them.
I know, shocker right? You have to spend time with something (or someone) to find out what they want.
In the case of my goats, it’s animal crackers. But in the case of your ideal client, it could be anything. And it’s up to YOU to figure it out.
Here’s my advice.
- Talk to them.
- Spend time with them.
- Follow them on social media.
- Roll in the dirt with them.
If you want to attract your goats (and ideal clients).
It helps to know them better than they know themselves.
2. Graze in the right pastures
If I was searching for goats.
I wouldn’t go to the desert.
I would go where goats are easy to find.
Grassy plains.
The same is true for your ideal clients.
Here are some of my favorite pastures.
- Local events.
- Reddit threads.
- Facebook groups.
- Farmers markets.
Identify the platforms, forums, and communities where your ideal clients hang out… and go there.
It sounds obvious, but most people forget it’s not about you. It’s about your goats and what they want.
3. Speak their language
Goats have their own language.
And so do your ideal clients.
I’ve noticed that every morning at about 7am, the baby goats are screaming their heads off. They’re hungry.
After feeding them, I don't hear them much the rest of the day. Because I listened and gave them what they wanted.
Here’s the good news. You can do the same thing with your ideal clients. But it will require you to listen.
- What are their struggles?
- What are their challenges?
- What are their aspirations?
- What are their goals?
Once you understand them, you’ll find it much easier to communicate with them.
- Every post you make.
- Every word on your website.
- Every email you send.
It’s just an answer to what they are already asking for.
Your ideal clients are like baby goats.
They're trying to tell you something.
Listen to their needs, understand their language, speak their language, and watch your marketing become 100x more effective.
