If you’ve been in business for <12 years… you’re still a child.
If you’ve been in business for <20 years… you’re still a teenager.
If you’ve been in business for <30 years… you’re barely an adult.
Yet, so many of us (myself included) get our panties in a bunch and curse the Gods for why we’re not successful yet.
Calm the fuck down.
I just ran the 34th annual Austin Turkey Trot. They have been running that race since 1991. I was three years old when they started.
They’ve been running races LONG before I even thought about starting my business.
So here’s your reminder that all good things take time.
People will always do it faster but assume that’s not you.
It’s a much better way to plan for the future.
If you’re creating the SAME thing across all your content platforms… you’re making a big mistake.
The Austin Turkey Trot has a timed race, an untimed race, and a 1-mile walk/run.
Of course, we signed up for the timed race. Not because we were trying to break any records (even though we did) but because we wanted room to run.
We didn’t want to deal with dodging people every 4-seconds to get around them.
It meant that the runners of the crowd could enjoy running… and the walkers could enjoy walking.
The lesson?
Catering to the diverse needs of your audience is crucial if you want to resonate deeply with them.
Your clients have different goals, preferences, and levels of experience.
Here's how to apply this to your marketing:
Don't make everyone run the same race; cater to your audience's unique needs.
Underrated marketing tactic… events.
I think we can all agree that people are craving experiences over stuff. More than 21,000 people took to the streets of Downtown Austin to participate in the Austin Turkey Trot.
It creates memories… it fosters connection… and it builds community.
But the Turkey Trot's brilliance isn’t the race. It’s the afterparty. There is live music, sponsor booths, and free goodies like cookies, coffee, and snacks.
This encourages participants to linger & connect. To reminisce on the experience and, more than likely… return next year.
The lesson?
Host. More. Events.
Events build stronger relationships and foster a loyal community.
Take home point…
- Play the long game.
- Cater to your audience.
- Create experiences.
