The weekend before New Year’s is the most important 3-days of the year for me.
It’s when I do my yearly “Life Design” to reflect on the past and plan for the year ahead.
I’ve broken it down to a 3-day (or step) framework so you can apply it to your life (and business).

👇
1. Review
If you’re rushing into the new year without reflecting on the previous year… you will repeat the same mistakes.
That’s why step one is all about review. I look back at the entire year and search for clues.
I ask myself such questions as:
- “What are the greatest happenings from last year?”
- “What am I most proud of?”
- “What would I do differently?”
- “What are the biggest risks I took?”
The answers to these questions help me avoid making the same mistakes and give me clarity on what I should do more of.
But to be more precise, here’s how you do it:
Step 1 - Gather Calendars, journals, photos, & note apps.
Step 2 - Review wins, losses, lessons, & ah-ha moments.
Step 3 - Assess which areas need (and don’t need) improvement.
Reflect on the past to design your future.
2. Goal Setting
If you don’t have a plan… then you can plan to fail.
Step two of my yearly life design is all about drilling down on the details. I ask myself such questions as:
- “What does my ideal life look like?”
- “What goals do I want to accomplish?”
- “What habits & behaviors support those goals?”
- “What poor habits do I need to STOP?”
I drill and drill and drill until my top-3 banner goals are as clear as possible for the year.
Don’t get me wrong. In the six years I’ve been doing this exercise, my plan NEVER goes exactly as I draw it out.
But I can promise you without a shadow of a doubt that I get a hell of a lot closer to achieving my goals than having no plan at all.
But to be more precise, here’s how you do it:
Step 1 - Brainstorm your ideal life.
Step 2 - Set 3 goals in alignment with your ideal life.
Step 3 - Create the action plan.
Goals without plans are just wishes.
3. Tracking
If you’re not tracking your progress… then expect to join the 90% of others who give up on their goals by February.
Step three is where I build the guardrails.
You can have the best plan known to man… but this thing called LIFE happens despite your wishes.
- Injuries
- Breakups
- Failed businesses
- AI (or now AGI)
Inevitably… You WILL fall off course, which is why check-ins are so important.
Here’s how they work.
You set an appointment with yourself weekly, monthly, and quarterly to check in and track your progress (or lack thereof).
Here are some questions I ask myself on my weekly check-ins:
- “What are my WINS this week?”
- “What are my LOSES this week?”
- “What are my “ah-ha” moments?”
- “What did I learn?”
You can do your check-ins as frequently or infrequently as you’d like… but at the very least, have some way of stacking on track.
Don't let life derail your goals.
Take home point…
- Review the past.
- Make a plan.
- Track your progress.
